Back to School Woes
I have to say that each year around this time I get a wee bit sad. Want to know why? Very soon, school will be back in session. Am I sad because I will miss my little ones’ company? I don’t have any offspring so that is not the source of my melancholy.
My distress stems from the opening of school and the onslaught of crazed morning traffic. No offense to any parent who is in a perpetual rush during school day mornings, but the traffic during school time is off the hook. Admit it moms and dads, summer time morning rush hour is quite different than when school is open. Of course the school bus schedules are a major factor as well.
Kids, I hope you had a great summer. Please be careful before you dart out into the street trying to catch the bus. Try not to send your parental units over the edge so early in the morning. Seriously, who wants to start any day with drama? Be easy on your folks. Oh and for the love of all that is holy, please, PLEASE bring home all the necessary books, assignments and materials for each night’s homework load. (Lil Wicked, I am kind of talking to you here)
I, in turn, will practice my deep breathing exercises while driving. If I have to raise my voice due to being cut off by a driver in a rush, I promise that my windows will be closed so as not to harm those delicate ears of anyone within the sound of my rant. If I must gesture, I will do so in the direction of my floor board. Any flipping will be done in the direction of gravity. I swear.
Hope all the scholars have a great school year and may the rest of us practice patience and grace.
Ready. Set. Learn!

Monday is the day around here, and I can't exactly say I am looking forward to it. I will also try reazation techniques, and wear my dental guard to avoid damaging my teeth as I grind them in frustration.
Not looking forward to the morning traffic. I hate having to get up earlier just to get to work on time, and that's only if there are no accidents on the road...There's gotta be a better way!
I don't mind the traffic, it's getting pinned behind the bus as it stops numerous times and there's no way to pass.
I can only make up for this frustration by yelling out the window at the kids, "Have fun at school, kids! Don't worry, it's only 18 years."
Yeah, they hate me. But it's mutual.
We have another week and a half (day after Labor Day) - I don't drive but I do run in the morning and am not looking forward to dodging around kids, parents, dogs, crossing guards glaring at me etc.
let the games begin!
My husband works nights and takes the bus home during school morning rush.
That means at least one backpack bump or bang in his back or side per day ;)
Great post!
ahhhh...one of the joys of homeschooling~~ missing this! my heaviest traffic jam is at the coffee pot as my teenage boys & i compete for the last cup!
Hello from the Philippines... I already graduated 10 years ago and I plan to go to school again.
Here the problem isn't the buses. It's all the parents who can't put their sweet, innocent child on the bus and insist on driving them to school evey day. They're the ones clogging up the traffic.
Sophie: Dental guard, excellent idea!
Ivan: Hover crafts! You know, like the Jetsons!
t2ed: Only you my friend. Tell me, does yor homestead get TPd often?
Lidian: Let me know how you make out, shin guards may be of some help...
Frances: Thanks!
QDB: Coffee pot rush, it sounds like a new reality show!
Robin: Amen sister, how soon til the first School Holiday???
I am totally excited.. I am starting a new school! a university at that! WOOT WOOT..
But I totally understand the wanting the babies to stay home with you.. I get that.
It shall pass once you understand the wonderfulness of your free time... If you ever get any..
I don't have any kids but I can testify to the traffic that the school year brings. It's funny how I can tell when school is out just based on how long it takes to get to work!
Don't think it's just the US.
Driving to work ehre is also much more pleasant during the school holidays. But our school year starts in January.
Hi Wicked: Lil Wicked told me to tell you she would be careful about getting her books etc. for each night's work. I took her to school today and we witnessed our first of the school year fender bender.....it backed up traffice for about 1.5 miles, Ug!!!! So, let the games/homework begin. Let's see how this year goes....or let's see when I have my first out of body experience...OOOMMMMM...I'm trying relaxation exercises....OOOOMMMMM...
Kids started school yesterday! Woo hoo! About darn time! But I agree that the traffic is terrible.
You have a delightful blog, and face your manga was fun. Yes, back to school traffic makes me want to cry. Well, not really. I'm not much of a crier. But it does make me frown.
